Well, it looks from my last blog on here that I haven't been online in a while. Just been busy with work-related things, and taking care of the tanks.
I have removed the bioballs from the cube tank, and replaced with LR rubble. Now I'm getting daily algae blooms of green and brown algae, which I'm kind of getting tired of scraping off the glass each day. Ugh. And it's covering my pretty coralline algae on the rocks too. Been doing water changes just fine, and added some calcium last week, but j…

The main reason that I start reefspace is I want to document what happen to my tank.I am not a rich person so every dollar,I will do research before I spend.
After on again /off again hobby for me, I decide to start stocking my tank with something else not just xenia and kenya tree. I bought this tank from Petco (1 dollars per gallon). Transfer stuff from my 30 gallons tank to the new 40 G breeder in December, 07 .
I decided to go bare bottom this time. I like the that no sand storm on the bare…

Finally. That thing has been sitting out in the barn since I got my 92. I don't know how many people have said "I'll be out on (insert day here). And, they never show up. Argh. I hate that. That's one of my peeves. If I tell you I'll be there at a certain time, I'm there. None of this CP time crap either.
Anyways... a buddy of mine from work asked if I still had it. I forgot how much I told him it would cost, he said $50. Then I told him to make it easy I'll take $40... just 2 $20's. :)

Since buying 2 new fish on Friday at my Local Fish Store, Orcutt Aquarium, I have been concerned that the fish I bought wont do well. Ok, you can call it paranoia but I am very concerned with all of the life contained in my Reef Tank. I am sure that I stated this in one of the million blog posts I have typed. Regardless, these animals to include Fish, Clams, Scallops, Crabs, Snails, Coral and my anemone are no longer in their natural habitat. They are in an artifical environment and they are 100…

Looks like my Prized Maxima Clam committed suicide last week. Unfortunately, it took about a week for it to die. The clam held on as long as it could before the good Lord took him home. Basically, what happened was that the Clam decided to move from a spot on the live rock to a space right below it. Well, it didnt quite make it there and it landed into the arms of my long tentacle anemone. From there, the damage was done, I hate to say it!!
When I got up for work first thing in the morning, I f…

Last night, it took me almost 3 hours to acclimate the 2 Blennys that I bought. So far they look really healthy and are very active. They already found prime real estate to settle down at and to hide in. There are plenty of cracks, tunnels and crevices for them to hide in. I decided to try to feed them along with my Clowns, the Clowns were very hungry but then again, they always are!!!
The Blennys didn't want anything to eat and normally that is enough to get me concerned but they are eating th…

As with almost every Friday, I take the girls to the Local Fish Store right after work. It is a good way for me to get started on my weekend and really unwind and relax. I was not really planning on buying anything other than a fish for my tank. I just like to stop by and see what new stuff the store picked up earlier in the week, especially before the weekend. That is when most of the fish and goods are sold. So I like to get a step ahead and see if there is something that I want for my tank.…

I am still learning more about my digital camera, and am trying different settings to achieve the clearest pictures of my tanks and their inhabitants. Right now, the best setting so far is the Underwater Macro setting, with ISO customized to 800, the flower setting changed to SI1 (I have no idea what this means), and some other lighting setting changed to +0.3 or -0.3, depending on the subject. This provides a fairly clear, close-up picture of my rocks and corals. Still researching the options f…

I went to my first local reef club meeting last weekend - it was nice to meet some people that I have "met" on the reef forums. It was held at a local club member's house and we got to see his 300g tank - really impressive!!!! I began to worry my tanks would never compare.
However, my biocube is beginning to sprout the nice coralline algae on the rocks everywhere. I am getting the pretty neon green, pink, and bright red versions. It's beginning to look a little like a rainbow in there, which is…

After I got home from work, I checked the chemistry on my tank and everything is very stable and going quite well!!! One thing that I noticed when I finally fixed the salinity issue in my tank is now the Calcium Levels and the Hardness are quickly being depleted. I was not having this problem when my salinity level was out of wack. Now since it is stable, the corals and clams seem to be soaking up the calcium like a thirsty camel in an oasis!!!
I was at a constant Calcium level of about 480 and…

When I came home today to put my fish in the tank to acclimate them, I decided to use my new refractometer to check out the salinity level in my tank. When I check my aquarium in the morning before I left to work, the Salinity level was right between 1.024/1.025. The chemistry looked really good with the Ammonia/Nitrites and Nitrates at 0.0ppm.

Just kidding.
Yesterday I had to move the next weakest blue damselfish into quarantine, as like the previous weakling, its tail was almost gone. This one luckily dove right into the net without much fanfare, and seems to have survived the night in the other tank just fine.
Oh, and I did notice that there are still very small acoel flatworms in the quarantine tank, but they are like a millimeter across and few in number. What, me worry?

The Flatworm eXit was only ~95% effective, it turns out. The flatworms that survived that treatment also didn't appear to be affected by a double-strength treatment last night, although by morning it was hard to identify many of them. I suspect that, like antibiotic resistant bacteria, I might be at risk of harboring a new, Flatworm eXit resistant strain of super-flatworms that will soon terrorize my entire neighborhood, but maybe I just have a few weakened stragglers that will need to be manual…

I need to research more about how large these 'shrooms can get, and see when/if I should frag in the future.
I re-did the rockscape in the main tank, and it looks a LOT better. Pictures to come soon. During the smelly rock clean-out, I found a large bristleworm and removed him - about 4 inches long and…

I dosed the one quarantine tank with Flatworm eXit last night. That is scary stuff -- very fast results! Anyway, maybe after work tonight I'll be able to tell if there was any collateral damage, but so far it seems to have only killed flatworms. I can see snails, amphipods, isopods, and even an Asterina starfish seem to have survived.
I'm hoping to catch the one abused damselfish from the main display tank and put him into quarantine, because otherwise I think it's a goner.

My tank is now well established. The move from my 4yr old 55 to the new 120 went well. I fly to Hong Kong frequently and am able to bring back Tridacna Clams. I'm looking for people interested in sharing the cost of my re-export licence. I can get 4-5 inch clams for $40-$75 depending on species/grade. That includes my licence costs. They are far superior to the 1.5 inch juviniles you can usually get that require a lot of phytoplankton until they reach a larger size. Delete Comment

After I got home from work last night, I decided to test the water of my Cycling Nano Reef Tank. I had assistance from my 2 daughters, they are just as excited as I am with the whole Reef thing!!! Eventhough I am not using a Metal Halide lighting system, the Power Compacts seem to be doing the trick for now. I can see the reflections of ripples in the water. Ok, it isnt as obvious as it would be with a metal halide lighting but it is still pretty apparent.
The tank looks really nice and the Specific Grav…

I went back to Orcutt Aquarium
to get some more Live Rock. My wife and daughters walked around and looked at all the different fish, corals and what not. My wife seems a little bit excited about this Reef Tank and all the neat stuff we can put in it.
So as I was getting my hands all wet with the water out of the Live Rock tanks at the store, I bought a few really large pieces for the tank with nice yellow, green and red highlights. Some of these look li…

Since yesterday, I added water and live sand to my tank and I left it running all day Thursday and Friday. So far, there are no leaks, cracks and everything seems to be working well, knock on wood!!! Off to work I go, I will be picking up my daughters after work and we will be going to the Aquarium Store. This has been our little Father and Daughter project. They just love going to the Fish store with Daddy and looking at the fish, coral and invertebrates.
Well, lucky for me, I got off of work…
